I’ve been helping small businesses rank online since 1995. Back then, the biggest challenge was getting a website indexed. Today, the challenge is making sure AI engines recommend you when a customer asks “who’s the best [your service] near me.”
That shift is real. AI search traffic converts at roughly five times the rate of traditional Google traffic, and the channel is growing at over 500% year over year. For small businesses that depend on being found by local customers, this is not a distant trend. It is happening now.
This page is a data note, not a social media playbook. It answers one question: when AI tools cite social platforms on high-intent searches, which networks show up?
Table of Contents
How social media affects AI responses
When people use AI search tools, or LLMs, like ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overviews and Gemini, social content can be mentioned and cited the same way a website can.
Search something in Google and you will often see an AI Overview. In that Overview it is common to see a social platform cited. In this data set the networks that show up most often are YouTube, Reddit, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram, depending on the model.
Uploading business information to the networks each model actually cites can help visibility inside those answers. That is not the same as posting everywhere and hoping.
Not every LLM checks every social platform the same way. The sections below are the networks each tool favored most in this data set, on high-intent searches.
About the data
The numbers come from Cairrot’s data lake. After I spoke with Connor Kimball on The Growth Garden, I received early access to Cairrot’s Universal Visibility Index and a Garden Partners cut of the underlying data.
How this slice is filtered:
- High-intent searches only. Prompts that imply buying intent, such as “best wealth advisors for high net worth individuals in Nebraska” or “trustworthy roofing companies near Omaha.” Purely informational prompts such as “what is considered high net worth?” are excluded.
- North American searches only.
- 700 runs
- 2,635 unique prompts
- 23,005 total citations
This is citation mix for social domains inside those answers. It is not a ranking of which network is “best for marketing.” It is not a claim about your niche until you run the same prompts against your competitors.
For how I think about measurement in general, see How to Track and Rank in LLMs and the GEO Tracking Guide.
Best social media channels for visibility on ChatGPT, AI Overviews, and other LLMs
Counts below are social-domain citations in this high-intent, North America slice. Unique pages is how many distinct URLs those citations came from. A high count on few unique pages means the model is returning the same URLs often.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT’s social citations in this set are concentrated on Reddit. LinkedIn is a distant second. YouTube appears, but those 144 citations come from only 3 pages, so it is reuse of a small set of videos, not broad YouTube coverage. Facebook, X, and Rumble barely register.
Google Gemini
Gemini is the YouTube-heavy model in this data. Reddit is second, with far more unique pages than YouTube. Facebook is the only other network with meaningful volume. LinkedIn and TikTok are near zero here.
Claude
Claude does not show Reddit in this social table. LinkedIn leads, then Facebook. Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and X appear at lower volume and on few unique pages.
If you need to watch Claude mentions over time, I compared the tracking tools here: Top 5 Claude Tracking Tools.
Perplexity
Perplexity cites the widest social mix. Reddit is first, then LinkedIn, then YouTube. YouTube’s 8,247 citations sit on only 25 unique pages. Facebook and Instagram have real volume. TikTok and X are smaller.
Perplexity tracking notes are in How to Track Perplexity Rankings Over Time.
DeepSeek
DeepSeek’s social citations are smaller in this slice and lean LinkedIn, then Reddit. Facebook and Instagram are close to each other. YouTube, TikTok, and X are minor.

My favorite social channels for getting into AI search
I still base the core of the work on Google. If a network matters in Google’s answers, it goes on the list first.
YouTube is number one for me.
Reddit shows up often in this kind of data. I do not specialize in Reddit.
Number two for local search is Facebook, or another Meta property, because that is where a lot of local business proof actually lives.
None of that replaces site architecture, GBP parity, or a consistent entity record. Social is one source layer. If the business facts on those profiles do not match the site, you add another conflict. See Google Business Profile and website parity.
