Reddit is still the most cited domain by LLMs for high-intent searches (October 2026 data study)

By Phil Belleville | Omaha SEO

I’ve been helping small businesses rank online since 1995. Back then, the biggest challenge was getting a website indexed. Today, the challenge is making sure AI engines recommend you when a customer asks “who’s the best [your service] near me.”

That shift is real. AI search traffic converts at roughly five times the rate of traditional Google traffic, and the channel is growing at over 500% year over year. For small businesses that depend on being found by local customers, this is not a distant trend. It is happening now.

This page is a data note on Reddit citations in high-intent AI answers, with a US local lens. It is not a Reddit posting playbook.

Key points

  • Reddit licensed content to Google and to OpenAI. Those deals are why the platform stayed in the training and answer stack.
  • ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Google AI Overviews still cite Reddit on buyer-style questions. AI Overviews matter here because they sit on the Google results page people already use.
  • In August 2026, several trackers reported a sharp drop in ChatGPT citations of Reddit. That produced a wave of “Reddit is over” commentary.
  • On high-intent US prompts in the partner data I reviewed, Reddit’s share moved down, not off the map. US high-intent citation share went from 17.04% to 12.94%.
  • Local and high-intent prompts did not match the cliff some providers published for broader prompt sets.

Reddit marketing and AI visibility

Reddit signed a content deal with Google, reported by Reuters in February 2024 at about $60 million a year, and a separate deal with OpenAI in May 2024 that puts Reddit posts into ChatGPT and related products. Reuters, Ars Technica.

That is why Reddit became a priority channel for AEO work. It is a source the models are allowed to use, and it is already written as questions and answers.

I have seen useful results when Reddit is one of three pillars in an AEO program, not the whole program. The service framing I use with clients who want that mix is on the Authority Engine landing page.

Data studies keep putting Reddit near the top of cited domains for recommendation queries. The public version of that work from Cairrot is Does Reddit marketing work for localized AEO/GEO?. The numbers in the next sections are from a Garden Partners cut of the same data lake, filtered to high-intent prompts.

ChatGPT cites Reddit less often after August 2026?

Some providers reported a large drop, and the timing lines up.

  • Promptwatch, covered by Search Engine Land, said Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from a 3.83% average (July 18 to August 7) to a 0.52% average (August 14 to 17), an 86% relative drop. Google AI Overviews in that same report moved more slowly, from about 2.5% in early July to about 2.1% in August. Search Engine Land.
  • OtterlyAI measured 16 brand reports and reported at least a 73% drop in ChatGPT citations of reddit.com in mid-August, while other engines in that study stayed nearly flat. OtterlyAI.

I assume those figures are accurate for the prompt sets those companies track. The issue is the mix. A lot of visibility data includes broad topical phrases. Those prompts matter. Most of the work I do is for owners who care about high-intent prompts that can turn into a customer: “best,” “near me,” a city, a service they hire for.

Reddit statistics from the high-intent data

Cairrot focuses on high-intent prompt data. After the Growth Garden conversation with Connor Kimball, I got access to a partner cut of that data. Reddit’s share on those prompts did not fall the way the broad-set headlines implied.

Month to month, high-intent citation share for Reddit:

  • United States: 17.04% before, 12.94% after.
  • Global: 11.43% of citations in August, 8.64% in September.
  • Japan and Korea: 12.31% down to 7.83% in September.

YouTube moved more than Reddit outside the US in this cut. Japan and Korea YouTube share went from 8.22% to 6.04%. In the US, YouTube moved less than one percentage point.

I work with US local businesses, so the US line is the one I use. The international lines are context. They are not a reason to build a Japan or Korea Reddit program from Omaha.

The biggest models still use Reddit

Reddit citations by AI platform: ChatGPT leads AI search, followed by Google AI Overview, Perplexity, and Gemini

On queries that imply the person wants to buy or hire, no other non-reference domain shows up more often in both ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers in this set.

In the partner data, Reddit is still the number 2 most cited domain in ChatGPT, behind Wikipedia, and the number 3 most cited domain in Gemini. On Gemini it is the most cited domain that is not a Google property.

Google AI Overviews belong in the same read. An Overview sits on the results page. Gemini is a separate product. If a tracker only reports Gemini, it misses the surface that already has the search traffic. Include both.

Local prompts

Adding a city changes the mix. Cairrot’s published local study, on a larger prompt set, found Perplexity citing Reddit more often once a city was in the prompt (citation share 1.83% to 3.17%), Gemini up as well (1.44% to 2.51%), and ChatGPT slightly down (1.39% to 0.93%). Cairrot local Reddit study.

That is the local lens I care about. A national informational prompt and “trustworthy roofing companies near Omaha” are not the same job.

Perplexity

perplexity-top-cited-domains

Reddit is Perplexity’s number 1 cited domain in this high-intent cut, ahead of Google properties and ahead of ChatGPT’s own domain.

I still track it. I do not build the client plan around it. Most of the owners I talk to are trying to show up in Google, including AI Overviews, and in ChatGPT. Perplexity is a third read, not the core.

Risk of Reddit for AEO

The usual warning is that bots or paid posts will get you punished by Google. The practical risk I see is narrower.

Reddit bans accounts that spam. A banned account loses the thread history you were trying to build. Google can see spam patterns too, but the damage from a bad Reddit program mostly stays on Reddit: removed posts, a flagged account, and a community that stops taking the account seriously.

Reddit is not disappearing from the answer stack because of that. The licensing deals with Google and OpenAI are commercial. They do not require your brand to post.

What I would not do: bought upvotes, unlabeled promo accounts, or a pile of new accounts posting the same recommendation. That is how you get removed. It is also how you create an entity conflict if the threads describe a different business than the site and Google Business Profile.

What people mean by Reddit personas for AEO

“Reddit personas” is not a standard in the transcript or in Google’s docs. In agency write-ups it usually means one of two things.

  • A buyer persona: the kind of person asking in a subreddit (homeowner comparing roofers, founder comparing tools).
  • An account persona: who posts. Guides that are careful about bans say use one real, named person per account, disclose affiliation, and do not run sock puppets. Example: SolCrys playbook.

I do not run a persona system. If a client is in a subreddit, I want the account to be a real person at the company, saying the same services and cities as the website. A fictional local expert is a consistency problem, not a tactic.

Best Reddit AEO tool

Three places I look when a client asks how to watch this:

  • Promptwatch, for the public ChatGPT citation-share series that flagged the August drop.
  • OtterlyAI, for brand-level before-and-after on ChatGPT citations.
  • Cairrot, which is what I use day to day because the Reddit view is tied to the same high-intent prompts as the rest of the AI visibility report, including AI Overviews.

reddit-brand-mentions-ai-search-dashboard

The Reddit report shows which threads are cited, sentiment, and which models are pulling those threads. Feature page, not the homepage: Reddit tracking for AI visibility.

If the job is specifically “who is tracking Reddit mentions inside ChatGPT answers,” those three cover it. I still want AI Overviews in the same view. A ChatGPT-only tracker will miss the Google surface.

Reddit listicles

A lot of cited Reddit URLs are list threads: “best X in [city],” “who did you hire for Y.” Those threads are closer to a high-intent prompt than a general discussion post.

I have seen them in citation tables often enough to treat them as a content slot, not as a growth hack. If a thread already ranks inside an AI answer for a service you sell, that thread is worth a correct, disclosed answer. Starting a new list post and voting it up is the spam pattern from the risk section.

What I would do with this

Reddit is still one of the most cited domains on high-intent US prompts in this data, including after August. It is not the only channel. YouTube still matters for Gemini. The site, GBP, and reviews still have to describe the same business.

If you want the research conversation, book from omaha-seo.com. Bring the site, the competitors you lose work to, and any subreddits you already show up in.
