It\u2019s worked for me, and it can work for you too.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s get right down to it.<span id=\"more-37309\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_three-step_process\"><\/span>A three-step process<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Of course, there\u2019s a lot involved with influencer marketing.<\/p>\n<p>But when you really break it all down, it involves three basic steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Finding a suitable influencer<\/li>\n<li>Reaching out to them<\/li>\n<li>Getting them to share your content<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That\u2019s how I approach it anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s begin with step one.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finding_a_suitable_influencer\"><\/span>Finding a suitable influencer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is probably the easiest step, but it does require a fair amount of research.<\/p>\n<p>How exactly do you zero in on an influencer?<\/p>\n<p>Well, for starters, you\u2019re probably already aware of at least a handful of influencers in your industry.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bloggers with sizable followings<\/li>\n<li>Popular YouTubers<\/li>\n<li>Industry experts<\/li>\n<li>Writers who regularly contribute to popular publications<\/li>\n<li>Celebrities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But if you need a little help or want to know how likely a particular person is to share, I recommend using BuzzSumo.<\/p>\n<p>One of the features I love there is \u201cView Sharers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let me show you how it works.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First,<\/strong> I enter a subject relevant to my industry\/niche. In my case, it\u2019s \u201ccontent marketing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what pops up:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next,<\/strong> I choose an article and click on \u201cView Sharers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what pops up now:<\/p>\n<p>Just like that, I get a list of people and companies that shared that particular article.<\/p>\n<p>I can also tell:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How many Twitter followers have<\/li>\n<li>Their retweet ratio<\/li>\n<li>Reply ratio<\/li>\n<li>Average retweets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These metrics are important because I can determine if they could potentially be an influencer that I would like to connect with.<\/p>\n<p>I also know what the likelihood of getting a response from them would be. And I can easily follow them or tweet to them for instant interaction.<\/p>\n<p>Other tools worth considering, besides BuzzSumo, include Traacker and Little Bird.<\/p>\n<p>I also suggest checking out this post from Kissmetrics for other ideas.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not saying you have to use a tool for finding influencers, but it does streamline the process substantially.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_big_of_an_influencer_should_l_target\"><\/span>How big of an influencer should l target?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A common question marketers new to this concept have is whether they should target a macro-influencer (e.g., Tim Ferris or Seth Godin) with hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of followers or a micro-influencer with say 15,000 followers.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a proponent of starting small and working your way up.<\/p>\n<p>From my experience, micro-influencers tend to be more receptive and much easier to get in touch with than major players who may get bombarded with thousands of emails every day.<\/p>\n<p>But feel free to take the path that makes the most sense to you.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reaching_out_to_influencers\"><\/span>Reaching out to influencers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is hands down the most difficult part of the process.<\/p>\n<p>You have to somehow figure out a way to:<\/p>\n<p>a)\u00a0get in touch with an influencer and<\/p>\n<p>b)\u00a0build rapport with them.<\/p>\n<p>You can accomplish this in several ways, but I\u2019m a fan of simply sending an email or using the contact box on their website.<\/p>\n<p>Most influencers (unless they\u2019re huge celebrities) will have some means of contacting them. Do your research until you find an efficient means of doing so.<\/p>\n<p>If you absolutely can\u2019t find their contact info, move on to the next potential influencer on your list.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_should_I_approach_them\"><\/span>How should I approach them?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The specific request you have will dictate the template you use.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, there\u2019s a:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>curation template<\/li>\n<li>influencer mention template<\/li>\n<li>guest blog template<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>and others.<\/p>\n<p>I recommend checking out this article from <em>Entrepreneur<\/em>. But it\u2019s definitely an option to keep in mind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now let me say this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It\u2019s ideal if you interact with an influencer on at least some level before hitting them up out of the blue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For example, you might regularly comment on their blog for a month prior to asking them for a favor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I know that I\u2019m more receptive to requests from loyal blog readers than to someone \u201coff the street.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Have_thick_skin\"><\/span>Have thick skin<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There are a couple of other little pearls of wisdom I would like to share with you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>First<\/strong>, you should be prepared for rejection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It\u2019s not realistic to expect the first influencer you contact to immediately respond and cater to your every whim.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Most of these people are busy and already have their inboxes flooded with similar requests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">No matter how charming or charismatic you may think you come off, you\u2019re probably not going to get many responses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Don\u2019t take it personally. It\u2019s a numbers game.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That\u2019s why I recommend creating a list of at least 10 potential influencers to get going. However, the more, the merrier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you expect to have success, it\u2019s going to take perseverance and patience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Just keep at it until you finally make a breakthrough.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>And here\u2019s another tip.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Use a free email tracker,\u00a0like this one from HubSpot, so you\u2019ll know who opened your emails and who didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It\u2019s a simple way to see what type of activity has happened after you hit \u201csend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you don\u2019t get a response from someone who most definitely opened your email, I recommend sending them a follow-up email after a few days or so.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Don\u2019t be a pest about it, but a polite follow-up may get an influencer to take notice of you and get you the response you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_them_to_share_your_content\"><\/span>Getting them to share your content<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Finally, you need to ensure that what you\u2019re delivering is genuinely providing them (and their audience) with value.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For instance, if you\u2019re asking an influencer to share a blog post you\u2019ve written, you\u2019d better make sure that it\u2019s top quality and highly relevant to their audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If they\u2019re willing to let you guest-post on their blog, it needs to be A+ content. Nothing less will suffice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In other words, you need to follow through and prove to them that they\u2019re making a good decision by helping you out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is obviously integral to building a solid relationship and could potentially lead to other opportunities down the road.
