If you weren\u2019t part of the original discussion, this conclusion might not seem so obvious.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, allow me to use this article to express a few forgotten truths in the SEO versus PPC debate.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Paid_Search_Cant_Replace_Organic_Vice_Versa\"><\/span>1. Paid Search Can\u2019t Replace Organic (&amp; Vice Versa)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/omaha-seo.com\/blog\/take-advantage-in-marketing-by-using-ppc-advertising\/\">Marketing with PPC advertising<\/a>. Paid search and search engine marketing are different beasts.<\/p>\n<p>One is not a substitute for the other.<\/p>\n<p>Each comes with its own strengths and weaknesses.<\/p>\n<p>Paid search, for example, is really good at driving non-branded traffic to your website.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a classic PPC scenario: The user knows nothing about your brand. They search for a product they want to buy.<\/p>\n<p>Your ad displays at the top of the search results page. The user clicks on your ad to see what you have to offer.<\/p>\n<p>In so doing, they get more familiar with your brand and move further along the conversion path.<\/p>\n<p>Can organic search do this? Perhaps.<\/p>\n<p>But even the highest-ranked organic search result won\u2019t display at the top of the page.<\/p>\n<p>At best, your organic listing will display in the middle of the page.<\/p>\n<p>At worst, your listing will be many pages deep.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, organic search is really good at driving branded traffic to your website.<\/p>\n<p>A classic SEO scenario: The user knows your brand. They search for your brand name.<\/p>\n<p>Your site shows up at the top of the organic search results. The user clicks on your listing and goes to your website.<\/p>\n<p>Can PPC do this? Yes, which is why you should also\u00a0bid on a brand in PPC.<\/p>\n<p>But what if your ad is the only thing that displays \u2013 with no organic listing? That could cause the user to question the legitimacy of your brand. So ideally, you\u2019d have both.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these tools bring strengths to the table. Why wouldn\u2019t you want both of them working for you?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Neither_SEO_nor_PPC_Is_Free\"><\/span>2. Neither SEO nor PPC Is Free<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A common argument against PPC is that it\u2019s expensive. You have to pay every time someone clicks on your ad. And if your accounts are professionally managed, you have to pay for that too.<\/p>\n<p>But as any SEO expert will tell you, SEO also takes time, money and expertise.<\/p>\n<p>If you want it done well, you\u2019re going to have to pay for it \u2013 whether you\u2019re paying an in house SEO manager or an outside consulting firm.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Its_Not_a_Zero-Sum_Game\"><\/span>3. It\u2019s Not a Zero-Sum Game<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes people make the mistake of thinking that SEO versus PPC is a zero-sum game. If you stop investing in one, the other will pick up the slack and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019ve rarely seen that happen. SEO and PPC won\u2019t typically cannibalize each other. Instead, they draw their results from different pools.<\/p>\n<p>This is a point we made with a client recently.<\/p>\n<p>The client is working with an SEO agency. This isn\u2019t unusual. In fact, we welcome this arrangement because we know good SEO will help drive PPC results and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>But in this case, the SEO consultant was encouraging the client to drop PPC entirely in some markets. His was going to pump up his organic efforts in some of our lower-performing locations, so advertising would no longer be necessary (he says!).<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s see what would happen if our client accepted this recommendation.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, organic drove\u00a0<strong>29% of sessions\u00a0<\/strong>for this client, generating\u00a0<strong>22% of the leads<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, PPC drove\u00a0<strong>43% of sessions<\/strong>, generating\u00a0<strong>55% of the leads<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"summitad-wrap\">\n<div class=\"summitad-text\">\n<p><strong>Official Google Ads Templates<\/strong><br \/>\nSelect your industry. Statistics Can Be Deceiving<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the \u201ccompetition\u201d between SEO and PPC, proponents of one side or the other will often trot out findings to support their case.<\/p>\n<p>But you have to look at these stats closely before you reach any conclusions.<\/p>\n<p>For example, one of our other clients had an SEO consultant who wanted them to stop PPC advertising entirely!<\/p>\n<p>He based his argument on his \u201cfinding\u201d that PPC traffic was suffering from bad site engagement when compared to SEO. Therefore, he argued, the client should put all its marketing dollars there.<\/p>\n<p>We weren\u2019t sure where the SEO consultant was getting this information. Because we were seeing something very different on our side.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, we suspected he had overlooked the fact that most of the PPC traffic was coming in via call-only campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>As you may know, traffic generated by these campaigns isn\u2019t directed to the client website at all, which would explain low engagement numbers!<\/p>\n<p>This recommendation might have been well-intentioned. But it was based on incomplete information.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, there was another important metric the consultant ignored altogether: new visitors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-315153 b-lazy pcimg b-loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/case-1-new-visitors-seo-vs-ppc.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1526px) 100vw, 1526px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/case-1-new-visitors-seo-vs-ppc.png 1526w, https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/case-1-new-visitors-seo-vs-ppc-480x213.png 480w, https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/case-1-new-visitors-seo-vs-ppc-680x301.png 680w, https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/case-1-new-visitors-seo-vs-ppc-768x340.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/case-1-new-visitors-seo-vs-ppc-1024x454.png 1024w\" alt=\"PPC drove 2,958 new visitors YTD\" width=\"1526\" height=\"676\" \/>For this client,\u00a0<strong>PPC drove 2,958 new visitors YTD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast,\u00a0<strong>organic drove only 1,246<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>What would happen to all those PPC-driven new visitors if you stopped advertising?<\/p>\n<p>Most likely, you would lose them.<\/p>\n<p>So when you see people arguing either for or against PPC versus SEO, make sure they\u2019re looking at\u00a0<strong>all<\/strong>\u00a0the relevant information.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Look_Beyond_Traffic_to_Leads_Conversions\"><\/span>5. Look Beyond Traffic to Leads &amp; Conversions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While we\u2019re on the topic of numbers, let me also point out that many of the statistics floating around on the internet would also benefit from a closer analysis.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a\u00a02014 study\u00a0from Conductor (an SEO company) stated that organic search is responsible for 64% of all site traffic, while paid search generates only 6%.<\/p>\n<p>What are they trying to infer with this statistic? That SEO is more effective than PPC? Probably.<\/p>\n<p>But I see two problems.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, that organic search traffic number would include the traffic generated by every possible kind of search inquiry \u2013 including searches where ads wouldn\u2019t display at all!<\/li>\n<li>Second, and more importantly, is traffic really the goal? Or should we be more interested in\u00a0leads and conversions?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because you could get all the traffic in the world \u2013 but if you\u2019re not getting leads or conversions out of it, what\u2019s the point?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"SEO_or_PPC_Choose_Both\"><\/span>SEO or PPC?
