If a term is suffering from\u00a0keyword cannibalization\u00a0that we\u2019re trying to fix \u2013 it\u2019s worth tracking this daily until it\u2019s resolved.<\/p>\n<p>Since this client needed a huge content strategy, we did both a health check and initial content gap analysis. This approach included breaking down all keywords for that industry into topics of relevant terms.<\/p>\n<p>In total, this process took over 20 hours and included thousands of keywords chunked into neat topics. The users are interested in finding out what are the best dog foods in the market.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et-box et-shadow\">\n<div class=\"et-box-content\">If you can include 1 \u2013 2 exact match for each of these terms in the text \u2013 you\u2019re going to have a solid foundation.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On-Site_Audit\"><\/span><span id=\"On-Site_Audit\">On-Site Audit<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Finding\u00a0<em>all<\/em>\u00a0the technical and content issues with the website requires a\u00a0full on-site audit. However, while big reports are easy on the eyes, it\u2019s small changes that make the difference.<\/p>\n<p>We audited the website and found a whole bunch of technical issues, from lack of breadcrumbs, poor internal link structures, bad quality anchor text, and unoptimized titles.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7464 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/diggitymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/man-in-laptop-doing-a-website-audit-966x600.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 461px) 100vw, 461px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diggitymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/man-in-laptop-doing-a-website-audit-350x217.jpg 350w, https:\/\/diggitymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/man-in-laptop-doing-a-website-audit-30x19.jpg 30w\" alt=\"man in laptop doing a website audit\" width=\"461\" height=\"284\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A full on-site audit tutorial is too big for this post (perhaps coming soon), but here are some quick tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Screaming Frog<\/strong> \u2013 A cheap way to regularly crawl your website. There are lots of ways to find errors, redirects, and missing metadata. You can also use a custom search to find all references for your keywords.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sitebulb<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This tool is more expensive and is a monthly recurring fee. However, it gives you lots of extra data that would be impossible to spot manually and hard with Screaming Frog. An example would be empty hyperlink references.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Site Search<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 By using Google\u2019s site search (site:domain.com) and operators, you can find hundreds of issues with index management, outdated page titles, and multiple pages targeting the same keyword. There are a lot of quick wins here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Page Titles<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 If you wrote your page titles 1 \u2013 2 years ago, you may find that they\u2019re outdated now. A quick site search with \u201cintitle:2018\u201d will find all your content that is either not updated or not yet crawled by Google.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Internal Links<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A major way to pass relevance signals and authority to your core pages is through internal links. It also meant that a full in-depth link analysis was unnecessary for this campaign.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et-box et-shadow\">\n<div class=\"et-box-content\">When a website has an algorithmic penalty, manual penalty or came in unfavorable after an update, it\u2019s a great decision to audit your link profile page-by-page.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In this instance, the initial check revealed there was nothing to be concerned about, so we moved on to technical implementation as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Had the website experienced problems with the link profile, we would have done a full backlink audit to try and recover this. Here\u2019s what to look out for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Link Distribution<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Pointing too many links toward internal pages instead of your homepage can cause lots of issues. So make sure that you\u2019re not overdoing it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anchor Text Analysis<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Using exact match, partial match and topical anchors are a great way to pass third-party relevance signals. Too many and you\u2019ll be caught out over-optimizing, but too few and you won\u2019t be competitive. Read more about\u00a0anchor optimization.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Referring IP Analysis<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 There are a finite number of IPv4 Addresses, so this isn\u2019t often a big cause for concern. However, it\u2019s worth making sure that you\u2019ve not got too many links from the same IP address.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Autonomous System Numbers<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Since a server can be assigned any number of IP addresses, these systems often include an ASN. An analyst is focused on reviewing the SERPs and finding what is working best today, while a data scientist wants to understand how things work.<\/p>\n<p>We built our team to include both since competitor analysis requires a keen eye for reviewing the SERPs and algorithm analysis requires solid data scientists.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to do SEO at a high level, you\u2019ve got to constantly be reviewing competitors. This research meant that we identified three pillars of content for their site. We\u2019ll get into this in further detail below.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Service Pages<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 these pages were dedicated to explaining what service was offered, how to contact and what was included with that offering.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blog Content<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 these posts were dedicated to providing non-commercial, informative content that was interesting to the reader.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resource Center<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 this section was dedicated to giving basic information about topics in their industry. Rather than matching up the running domains with a weightlifting page, try to keep them on topic.<\/p>\n<p>This looks the most natural, so it\u2019s the least likely to be picked up by Google.<\/p>\n<p>The trick was to write the content ourselves and focus on providing external links that made sense to the piece of content. In reality, they\u2019re working at a page-by-page level.<\/p>\n<p>This is called Google\u2019s PageRank algorithm and is actually the crux of this entire strategy.<\/p>\n<p>So what does that mean for you?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7470\" src=\"https:\/\/diggitymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/employee-typing-on-computer-633x320.jpg\" alt=\"typing on computer\" width=\"487\" height=\"273\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Google takes the links pointed toward each page and gives that page a value. Then the number of links coming out of that page will be a fraction of the power of that page.<\/p>\n<p>This means that even if a page has a high domain authority, it\u2019s not necessarily passing a lot of authority to your website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But you can change that with this approach:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the previous step, we had already acquired a DR70+ link, but we need to give it some juice to power up our rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Since we wrote the first tier link content ourselves, we built it to rank for specific keywords that discussed the need for our client\u2019s services. This way we could build guest posts that would not only help to pass authority but also build up organic traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Then we could benefit from both an improvement in organic traffic but\u00a0<em>also<\/em>\u00a0referral traffic. Truthfully, this is a bit overkill, but we wanted to see how much we could squeeze it.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_did_Googles_PageRank_do\"><\/span><span id=\"What_did_Googles_PageRank_do\">What did Google\u2019s PageRank do?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As mentioned before, the element that brought the biggest bang for the buck in this campaign was the use of second-tier link building.<\/p>\n<p>It helped us to take a relatively small number of links (4 \u2013 5 every two months) and then power them up the following month.<\/p>\n<p>So, here\u2019s everything you need to know about Google\u2019s PageRank.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Google_PageRank\"><\/span><span id=\"What_is_Google_PageRank\">What is Google PageRank?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Google uses a citation-based algorithm that looks at the relationship between individual pages. While referring domains are important, it\u2019s the referring pages that are important.<\/p>\n<p>This diagram in Google\u2019s patent helps us to see that PageRank is calculated by the number of links pointed towards a page, as well as the number of external links from that page.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7448 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/diggitymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Google-PageRank-Diagram-calculation.png\" alt=\"Google PageRank Diagram calculation\" width=\"403\" height=\"469\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s clear to see why this strategy works, but what\u2019s the math behind it?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_Google_PageRank_work\"><\/span><span id=\"How_does_Google_PageRank_work\">How does Google PageRank work?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Earlier this year Majestic put out this amazing video that goes through the exact science of how PageRank actually works. This video is extremely detailed.<\/p>\n<p>They break down how Domain Ratings provide radically different results from URL Ratings. It\u2019s seriously worth a watch.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3sOF6twdoHg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_we_chose_it_for_this_client\"><\/span><span id=\"Why_we_chose_it_for_this_client\">Why we chose it for this client?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>My team tailors the strategy for each campaign based on the initial analysis. So, what made us decide that PageRank sculpting was the best strategy for this site?<\/p>\n<p>The nature of the client\u2019s website meant that bloggers aren\u2019t really the industry experts that we needed, but we know it\u2019s a strategy that works well.<\/p>\n<p>So we decided to alternate between first tier links one month, followed by second-tier guest posting the following month.<\/p>\n<p>Truthfully, the blogger approach probably could still have worked in this industry too.<\/p>\n<p>We figured that such a trust dominated industry might be worth focusing on high-quality websites rather than high-quantity websites.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7471\" src=\"https:\/\/diggitymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/client-deal-shake-hands-575x320.jpg\" alt=\"client deal shake hands\" width=\"450\" height=\"274\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The problem with always getting high-quality links is that often you\u2019re getting fresh articles without much PageRank (i.e. link juice) in very small quantities.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re good \u2013 but they don\u2019t always outweigh cost-to-result ratio of blogger links.<\/p>\n<p>We chose to use guest posting en masse to improve crawl rates, anchor text and authority toward these pages.<\/p>\n<p>I advise that you avoid using auto-generated link services as your second tier links. While they will definitely improve crawl rates of your page \u2013 they\u2019re not going to help with authority.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You also run the risk of having your first tier links de-indexed \u2013 which is not what you want\u2026 and definitely not what your referring domains want.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, focus on good quality blogs that would be safe if they pointed toward your own page and then just direct them toward these trustworthy sources.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, we had the time and resources to give this a shot at the start of the campaign instead of later down the line \u2013 which garnered some excellent results.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Results\"><\/span><span id=\"Results\">Results<\/span><span
