Google already has that transcription technology. It would allow Google to \u201cunderstand\u201d the topic and what is being discussed, similar to how Knowledge Graph is used to provide answers because it\u2019s aware of the relationship between things.<\/p>\n

Google Podcasts<\/a> is making it possible to search for episodes based on what was discussed in a show.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Android Police, Google Podcasts is automatically transcribing dialogue and using it as metadata.<\/p>\n

So users can search for specific episodes even if they can\u2019t remember the name of the podcast.<\/p>\n

Android Police discovered that transcripts are being logged in the page source of episode web pages on the Google Podcasts web portal.<\/p>\n

It has been confirmed you can search for text in the transcript using the Google Podcasts app and find the right episode.<\/p>\n

Transcripts cover the entire show, however, they\u2019re not perfect. Since they\u2019re automatically generated there are bound to be some mistakes.<\/p>\n

For example, the name \u201cCorbin Davenport\u201d was transcribed as \u201cCorbin dabbing port.\u201d<\/p>\n

Android Police also notes that transcripts are not being generated for all episodes. Although when they are generated it greatly improves the discoverability of the episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google has been planning this since last year<\/h2>\n

Last August,\u00a0we reported\u00a0on an interview Zach Reneau-Wedeen of Google\u2019s podcast team in which he announced plans to make audio content more searchable.<\/p>\n

It would appear we\u2019re now seeing the first signs of Google\u2019s plan coming to light.<\/p>\n

This has the potential to help more podcasts get found by new listeners. It can also help podcasts get found by lapsed listeners.<\/p>\n

If a former listener remembers a line of dialogue but doesn\u2019t remember what podcast it was from, they may be able to find the exact episode thanks to these transcripts.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s much Google could do with podcast transcripts in the future, such as publishing them on the web and making them even more searchable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
