DEEP, COMPLEX MARKETING FUNNELS<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If there\u2019s one thing I\u2019ve learned from working with over 50 different small businesses and eCommerce shops, it\u2019s this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most people\u2019s funnels suck.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They either have no idea what their funnel even is (and get squeamish when you mention \u201cGoogle Analytics goal conversions\u201d), or they understand their funnel but don\u2019t have the skills or experience to improve it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2019, you need to have a full grasp of your marketing funnel<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 where people are entering, dropping off, and converting \u2014 and know how to improve it.<\/p>\n<p>I get it. Marketing funnels used to be simple. You\u2019d run an ad to a landing page or have your content rank for a keyword with purchase intent, and people would convert right then or they wouldn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>But with improvements in data collection, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, it\u2019s become much more complex and personalized.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of a modern marketing funnel:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>You&#8217;ve prepared your website: the Facebook re-targeting pixel is installed and Google Analytics is configured with goal conversions.<\/li>\n<li>Someone searches for ways to get rid of acne on Google, and they land on your site through an organic ranking or an ad. (Notice the video results. I\u2019ll talk more on that later.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-outline\" src=\"https:\/\/media.sumo.com\/storyimages\/6bbcf014-04da-4f3c-bded-00f4f7b453f2\" alt=\"Screenshot showing a google search\" \/><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>They start reading your article or watching your video but get distracted.<\/li>\n<li>You run a re-targeting ad to get them back to finish consuming your content.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-outline aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.sumo.com\/storyimages\/bd8eb6ef-a661-4c74-9f9b-2a03d7a71c50\" alt=\"Screenshot showing a video content about acne\" \/><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>This time, they read the whole article\/watch the whole video, like what they\u2019re hearing, and sign up for your email list to get more acne info. (Maybe you have a video course series as a\u00a0content upgrade.) Or they just buy right here and now, if you\u2019re lucky!<\/li>\n<li>They get a series of emails (you\u2019ll learn about email AI in section 6 of this guide). Based on which emails they open and which links they click, their email drip feed becomes further personalized. Maybe you find they\u2019re interested in acne removal for teenage women.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-outline aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.sumo.com\/storyimages\/eead1769-1aa3-46ca-a919-44e3e555dab3\" alt=\"Screenshot showing an email funnel\" \/><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>Your advertising tools automatically increase your ad spend on the 15th because you know that people generally get their second paycheck of the month then and have disposable income.<\/li>\n<li>They get their paycheck and finally decide to invest in your acne cream because you\u2019ve earned their trust and spoken to their specific problem.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>See how complex \u2014 and personalized \u2014 funnels are now?<\/p>\n<p>This wouldn\u2019t be possible without advancements in AI and big data, as well as detailed analytics. MANDATORY MOBILE WEBSITE OPTIMIZATION<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Speaking of funnels, one of the most important pieces of your funnel is your website (where the sale is made). And a lot has changed in the world of site design in the last few years.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve followed marketing trends for any of the last five years, you\u2019ve heard that mobile optimization is important. That\u2019s still true. In fact, it\u2019s truer now than ever.<\/p>\n<p>Why, you ask?<\/p>\n<p>Because on March 26, 2018, Google began rolling out their mobile-first index. Meaning\u00a0<strong>Google is ranking your site primarily based on your mobile site<\/strong>, NOT on your desktop site.<sup>[*]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>So until now, if you weren\u2019t mobile-optimized, it really wasn\u2019t a big deal. Sure, it could have hurt your mobile conversions, but Google wouldn\u2019t have changed your rankings. Now, if you\u2019re not mobile-friendly but your competitors are, they can edge you out and lower your search rankings.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not all. Even more important than that are these stats:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>From 2016 to 2017, the percentage of visits from mobile devices grew from 57% to 63% in the US.<sup>[*]<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Nearly 60% of online retail sales worldwide came from mobile in 2017. That number is estimated to increase to 72.9% by 2021 (see chart below).<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/13139\/estimated-worldwide-mobile-e-commerce-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">*<\/a>]<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"storysmall_center border-outline\" src=\"https:\/\/media.sumo.com\/storyimages\/9b6db380-0367-4659-bc11-4b42cbd0bfa1\" alt=\"Screenshot showing mobile e-commerce rates\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So mobile-friendliness is important. ONE-SECOND MOBILE SITE SPEED<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Having a seamless mobile experience doesn\u2019t mean squat if your site loads too slow.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Chavez, the Product Management Director for Google Ads, claimed that\u00a0<strong>more than half of all smartphone users will\u00a0<\/strong><strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0make a purchase if a site takes too long to load.<\/strong>\u00a0He didn\u2019t give an exact time, but shooting for less than one second to load a page is a good benchmark.<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MmfaZV96x7A&amp;t=2170s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">*<\/a>]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>If that wasn\u2019t reason enough to make site speed a priority in 2019, Google put the final nail in the coffin with their speed update which started hurting slow sites rankings as of July 9, 2018. Their update stating, \u201ccontent that is slow-loading may perform less well for both desktop and mobile searchers.\u201d<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2018\/01\/using-page-speed-in-mobile-search.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">*<\/a>]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>They haven\u2019t given an exact load time. But many SEO professionals agree that anything over two seconds can harm your rankings.<\/p>\n<p>That said, two seconds is still a long time for the average impatient mobile user, which is why I recommend setting one second as your benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>Ready to speed up your site? INSTAGRAM ADS, GOOGLE ADS, AND FACEBOOK ADS<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So far we\u2019ve discussed the end-location of funnels (your website) and SEO. But ads are, of course, also a major marketing trend in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Ads are nothing new. But the\u00a0<em>kinds<\/em>\u00a0of ads you can run (and how easy it is to run them) is what\u2019s trending in the new year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Instagram is growing at a crazy rate thanks to Instagram Stories, which allow users to share snippets of video similar to SnapChat. Specifically, monthly active users grew 28.9% in 2017 and 13.1% in 2018. Most importantly, their ads are fairly cheap right now (but are steadily rising) at an average of $0.70 to $0.80 cost per click.<sup>[*]<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Facebook ad spend grew 40 percent year over year in Q2 2018. Ad spend on Instagram grew a massive 177% in the same time period!<sup>[*]<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Google AdWords re-branded to Google Ads \u2014 it has a more intuitive interface, is easier to use, and leverages machine learning (responsive search ads that let you create an ad that adapts to show more text \u2014 and more relevant messages \u2014 to your customers) for potentially better conversion rates.<sup>[*]<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-outline\" src=\"https:\/\/media.sumo.com\/storyimages\/b40f8828-15e5-4cd0-8570-b41b9988ee6b\" alt=\"Screenshot showing google adwords\" \/><\/div>\n<p>What I\u2019m saying is this:<\/p>\n<p>Instagram is a huge opportunity platform right now, especially for eCommerce stores, which rely heavily on product photos. It makes sense \u2014 according to a report by Cisco,\u00a0<strong>video traffic is projected to make up 81% of all internet traffic by 2021<\/strong>, up from 73% in 2016.<sup>[*]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s massive!<\/p>\n<p>But what made me carve out a spot for video in a 2019 marketing trends article?<\/p>\n<p>Like ads, advancements in video technology have made video easier than ever to get started with. More importantly, some key companies have made major pushes to make video more and more appealing as a marketing channel.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Facebook launched its video-on-demand service, Facebook Watch, in August 2017. One year later (August 2018), that service released worldwide, reaching\u00a0<strong>over 50 million people per month<\/strong>\u00a0in the US alone.<sup>[*]<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>YouTube counter-launched their own initiative, upgrading their original Creator Studio (the place where you uploaded, edited, and published video) to YouTube Studio. They essentially made it easier to create and share video with enhanced analytics and personalized recommended resources so you can learn more based on your specific channel\u2019s needs.<sup>[*]<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>More and more Google search results display video (like my search for \u201chow to get rid of acne\u201d in trend #1), meaning video is SEO friendly.<sup>[*]<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All this and I haven\u2019t even mentioned virtual reality and the push effect that\u2019s having on video marketing. But we\u2019re not\u00a0<em>quite<\/em>\u00a0there yet with VR, so I\u2019ll save that (perhaps for 2020 marketing trends?).<\/p>\n<p>So how do you implement video marketing in your\u00a0marketing mix?<\/p>\n<p>Video marketing doesn\u2019t have to be daily, weekly, or even monthly videos. It can be as simple as product videos, demos, or explainer videos. CONTENT PILLAR PAGES AND CLUSTERS<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To end our 2019 marketing trends, I leave you with my absolute favorite marketing method: content marketing.<\/p>\n<p>Content marketing is amazing! It\u2019s responsible for hundreds of thousands of monthly visits to my own blogs, tens of thousands of dollars of revenue for my clients, and more. In 2018, Zuckerberg furthered this high-quality initiative, saying, \u201cOne of our big focus areas for 2018 is making sure the time we all spend on Facebook is time well spent.\u201d<sup>[*]<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So\u00a0<strong>not only will higher-quality content help you show up on Google, it will also help your posts show up (and get more engagement) on social media sites<\/strong>\u00a0like Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>To comply, one thing you can do is create \u201cpillar pages\u201d. These are pages on your site \u2014 typically in-depth articles (2,000 words or more) that cover\u00a0<em>everything<\/em>\u00a0someone needs to know on a particular topic.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this, you can leverage a tactic I call \u201ccontent clustering\u201d, where you create a series of articles related to the topic of your pillar page.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I created a pillar page on the topic of RV rental companies for our travel blog, shown below.<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewanderingrv.com\/rv-rental-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">*<\/a>]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"storysmall_center border-outline\" src=\"https:\/\/media.sumo.com\/storyimages\/d690f017-bb54-43db-9079-f6f79234452e\" alt=\"Screenshot showing content about RVs\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>This page reached the #1 position on Google for it\u2019s target keyword (RV rental companies) within just one month of being published.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of reasons for this \u2014 my site\u2019s brand authority, topical relevance, and technical SEO \u2014 but there are two main reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I created a cluster of sub-pages covering related content, such as \u201cbest RV rentals in Las Vegas\u201d, that internally linked back to my pilar page.<sup>[*]<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>The article uses all the\u00a0content writing best practices\u00a0I\u2019ve learned in 6+ years of writing and SEO, including short sentences\/paragraphs, lots of images, research-based stats, screenshots, and more.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Want to learn how to create the highest-possible-quality content you can?
