This change did away with the longstanding \u201cSearch by Image\u201d and \u201cView Image\u201d buttons on Google searches. Post-February 15<sup>th<\/sup>, 2018, users cannot view images without navigating to the website they live on. On the user side, many saw this change as a petty roadblock to viewing images.<\/p>\n<p>The reasoning behind this Google update is not clear. The \u201cBrackets\u201d Core Update was a perfect example of this. Some organizations saw changes in their search rankings as early as March 4<sup>th<\/sup>, while most felt the effects on March 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0and throughout the proceeding weeks. In the wake of a Core update, the first implication typically means that it\u2019s time for an organization within a certain industry(s) to rethink their content strategy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68369\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jeffbullas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Brackets-core-Update-for-Google-algorithm-updates.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jeffbullas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Brackets-core-Update-for-Google-algorithm-updates.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.jeffbullas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Brackets-core-Update-for-Google-algorithm-updates-768x563.jpg 768w\" alt=\"Brackets core Update for Google algorithm updates\" width=\"810\" height=\"594\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The question revolves around the specifics of creating content to abide by Google\u2019s new rules. Google\u2019s John Mueller gave an explanation of this update and mentioned that the primary focus of this change was more about content relevance than strictly quality.<\/p>\n<p>When creating content, organizations should focus on\u00a0improving their E-A-T Score\u00a0and ensure the links they build are in good context with their messaging.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Zero-Result_SERP_March_14th\"><\/span>3. Zero-Result SERP (March 14<sup>th<\/sup>)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Zero-Result SERP update didn\u2019t make gigantic waves across the web, nor did it send SEO specialists into a panic. The purpose of this update was simply to help searchers quickly answer black and white questions. \u201cBlack and white questions\u201d refer to ones related to calculations, weather, time, etc.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jeffbullas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Zero-Result-SERP-for-Google-algorithm-updates.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jeffbullas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Zero-Result-SERP-for-Google-algorithm-updates.png 810w, https:\/\/www.jeffbullas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Zero-Result-SERP-for-Google-algorithm-updates-768x927.png 768w\" alt=\"Zero Result SERP for Google algorithm updates\" width=\"810\" height=\"978\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These answers are presented on Knowledge Cards in the \u201cZero\u201d position above all the other search results.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Mobile-First_Index_Roll-Out_March_26th\"><\/span>4. Mobile-First Index Roll-Out (March 26<sup>th<\/sup>)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The web has been moving towards mobile for several years. In fact, being as how\u00a0mobile searches have outnumbered desktop\u00a0searches for nearly four years now, some considered the Mobile-First Index Roll-Out to be overdue.<\/p>\n<p>The big change of this update is that mobile versions of websites will now be indexed first over desktop versions (as the name implies) by the Google bots. So, webmasters need to prioritize the functionality of their mobile sites and ensure they run seamlessly.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a common misconception of this update is there will be big changes to how mobile content ranks. On the contrary,\u00a0<strong>Google has gone on record stating that the changes focus on indexing, not ranking<\/strong>. Here is what they said on the\u00a0Webmasters Blog:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMobile-first indexing is about how we gather content, not about how content is ranked. Content gathered by mobile-first indexing has no ranking advantage over mobile content that\u2019s not yet gathered this way or desktop content. Moreover, if you only have desktop content, you will continue to be represented in our index.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Snippet_Length_Drop_May_13th\"><\/span>5. Snippet Length Drop (May 13<sup>th<\/sup>)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This was another one of Google\u2019s eyebrow-raising updates of 2018. The thing that made the Snippet Length Drop update peculiar was the fact that Google\u00a0<em>increased\u00a0<\/em>the snippet length just five months prior.<\/p>\n<p>Now, snippets on desktop searches are limited to roughly 160 characters (down from around 300). On mobile, the character limit is now in the ballpark of 130. The rationale behind this update is not entirely clear \u2013 like most Google updates. However, Google has advised webmasters not to panic about this change or focus too much of their energy on snippets, as they are selected for a number of reasons and not always taken from Meta descriptions.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Video_Carousels_June_14th\"><\/span>6. Video Carousels (June 14<sup>th<\/sup>)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The addition of video carousels in Google searches is further evidence that the web is evolving to become more\u00a0video-centric. This change means that searchers are now treated to a number of video results per their query \u2013 most of them being from YouTube, which Google has owned since 2006.<\/p>\n<p>This update replaced video thumbnails with carousels under the first result in the search rankings. Not every single query is going to give you videos, however. These carousels are typically triggered by phrases like\u00a0<em>how to, top ____, best tips for \u00ad\u00ad\u00ad\u00ad___.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jeffbullas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Video-Carousels-for-Google-algorithm-updates.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jeffbullas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Video-Carousels-for-Google-algorithm-updates.png 810w, https:\/\/www.jeffbullas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Video-Carousels-for-Google-algorithm-updates-768x706.png 768w\" alt=\"Video Carousels for Google algorithm updates\" width=\"810\" height=\"745\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Mobile_Speed_Update_July_9th\"><\/span>7. The Mobile Speed Update of the summer placed a big emphasis on the loading times of mobile websites when determining rankings of mobile searches.<\/p>\n<p>Being as how mobile is all the rage these days, many would assume that this update was the grim reaper for slow mobile sites across the world. Thankfully, this update seemed like more of a warning shot from Google, as the vast majority of impacted sites had the absolute slowest loading times based on a small handful of queries.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the small effect, this update should light a fire under webmasters to be proactive and ensure their mobile versions aren\u2019t bogged down with slow speed.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Medic_Core_Update_August_1st\"><\/span>8. Medic Core Update (August 1<sup>st<\/sup>)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Medic Core Update was a doozy. The ripple effect of this August 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0update sent SEO experts across the world into a mass scramble to pick up the pieces of shattered rankings. The most prominent takeaway from this algorithm change was that organizations in\u00a0<em>Your Money Your Life<\/em>\u00a0industries paid the biggest price.<\/p>\n<p><em>Your Money Your Life (YMYL)\u00a0<\/em>organizations refer to those in health, finance, fitness, law, and so on. The purpose of this update was to ensure that searchers were paired with the most relevant and credible information as possible.
